Master Photographers-General

Ara Güler

Kandilli-1956

Ara Güler, one of the most famous Turkish photographers is often referred to as 'the eye of Istanbul' for documenting this city. His style is quite distinctive as he often uses black and white photography as seen in the picture above. This picture was taken in Kandilli, Istanbul. Regarding the black and white nature of this picture a high contrast is maintained. This also enables the artist to reflect Istanbul's nostalgic and melancholic aesthetic in a way. This photography demonstrates shallow depth of field as the subject, which in this case are the two chairs, is in focus and the background is blurry.
